Infantry is composed of various troop types with unique characteristics (and costs). The heavy infantry is
represented by grenadiers and various guard units, costly but effective. Light troops are represented by voltigeurs,
tiralleurs and rifles, most effective in skirmish order or line, but capable of assault in column when required. Then
there is the line, militia and reserve, varying in effectiveness from empire to empire but always performing useful
functions and most important, very affordable. Infantry can form line, column, square or skirmish order, each
formation with its advantages and disadvantages.

Cavalry is varied: armoured cuirassier, mounted dragoons capable of shock tactics as well as small-arms fire, and
some empires have specialized Garde-du-Corps, expensive but deadly on the field of battle. There are light cavalry
as well, chasseurs, hussar and lancer-armed uhlans, quick and deadly when aimed at the enemy infantry.

There are three types of artillery: heavy, slow but deadly; light, capable of moving into the attack but with less
firepower; and mounted, quick to rake the enemy armies but expensive to build.

There is a unique battlefield for each battle but terrain types are common. Villages offer protection as do woods and
shrubs, rivers must be crossed and elevation factored into any battle plan since heights block line of sight and high
ground gives the defender an advantage. Pioneers can dig entrenchments, and fortresses give additional protection
if you have one. Each side has three strategic points on the battlefield, and the capture of any two of the enemy’s
points will give you the victory. Casualties count as well, and inflicting enough damage on the enemy can carry you
to victory as well.

To view a battle, start the sim-battle GUI application. Under the ‘file’ pull-down menu, select ‘load sim-battle result’
and select the battle you wish to view. Click the ‘round’ arrows on the ‘sim-battle result’ window to scroll through
the 25 rounds that a battle contains. Moving the cursor over a formation will give you information on it:
